Of all the endless variety of phenomena which nature presents to our senses, there is none that fills our minds with greater wonder than that inconceivably complex movement which, in its entirety, we designate as human life; Its mysterious origin is veiled in the forever impenetrable mist of the past, its character is rendered incomprehensible by its infinite intricacy, and its destination is hidden in the unfathomable depths of the future. Whence does it come? What is it? Whither does it tend? are the great questions which the sages of all times have endeavored to answer.

Modern science says: The sun is the past, the earth is the present, the moon is the future. From an incandescent mass we have originated, and into a frozen mass we shall turn. Merciless is the law of nature, and rapidly and irresistibly we are drawn to our doom. Lord Kelvin, in his profound meditations, allows us only a short span of life, something like six million years, after which time the suns bright light will have ceased to shine, and its life giving heat will have ebbed away, and our own earth will be a lump of ice, hurrying on through the eternal night. But do not let us despair. There will still be left upon it a glimmering spark of life, and there will be a chance to kindle a new fire on some distant star. This wonderful possibility seems, indeed, to exist, judging from Professor Dewar's beautiful experiments with liquid air, which show that germs of organic life are not destroyed by cold, no matter how intense; consequently they may be transmitted through the interstellar space. Meanwhile the cheering lights of science and art, ever increasing in intensity, illuminate our path, and marvels they disclose, and the enjoyments they offer, make us measurably forgetful of the gloomy future.

Though we may never be able to comprehend human life, we know certainly that it is a movement, of whatever nature it be. The existence of movement unavoidably implies a body which is being moved and a force which is moving it. Hence, wherever there is life, there is a mass moved by a force. All mass possesses inertia, all force tends to persist. Owing to this universal property and condition, a body, be it at rest or in motion, tends to remain in the same state, and a force, manifesting itself anywhere and through whatever cause, produces an equivalent opposing force, and as an absolute necessity of this it follows that every movement in nature must be rhythmical. Long ago this simple truth was clearly pointed out by Herbert Spencer, who arrived at it through a somewhat different process of reasoning. It is borne out in everything we perceive—in the movement of a planet, in the surging and ebbing of the tide, in the reverberations of the air, the swinging of a pendulum, the oscillations of an electric current, and in the infinitely varied phenomena of organic life. Does not the whole of human life attest to it? Birth, growth, old age, and death of an individual, family, race, or nation, what is it all but a rhythm? All life-manifestation, then, even in its most intricate form, as exemplified in man, however involved and inscrutable, is only a movement, to which the same general laws of movement which govern throughout the physical universe must be applicable.

The fact that Boyce's alleged defamation hasn't appeared anywhere in the media yet makes this a pretty strange case. And it's also somewhat customary in these situations for the celebrity to sue the media organization prepared to tortiously interfere with a contract. Which leads us to wonder whether this lawsuit, and the grand opening, might merely be intended to scare off Boyce. We'll see if this suit goes any further.

The truth about Jesus is that he never intended to start a church or a new religion. He did not understand himself to be the divine Son of God; rather, he saw himself as the “Son of [hu]Man[ity]” or an “average Joe.” Not only did he not start a church, he joined the reform movement of John the Baptizer (aka John the Baptist), who was a popular and charismatic Jewish prophet.

So who is Jesus Christ? The Jesus Christ of most traditional theology is a distortion of both the Jesus of history and the Christ of the Christian faith—an attempt to take the metaphor of Christ and invest it totally in the historical figure of Jesus of Nazareth. It is a distortion because it makes a very Jewish Jesus into the first Christian and not the faithful Jew that he was. The truth about “Jesus Christ” is that when we look only at this hybrid concept we lose clear sight of both the human being and the mythological icon. What we hope to do in this dig is excavate separately the man (Jesus) and the myth (Christ) and unearth a new meaning for the statement “Jesus [is] Christ.”

AFGHANISTAN AND THE GHOST OF KIM

"He sat, in defiance of municipal orders, astride the gun Zam-Zammah on her brick platform opposite the old Ajaib-Gher -- the Wonder House as the natives called the Lahore Museum. Who hold Zam-Zammah, that "fire-breathing dragon,' hold the Punjab; for the great green bronze piece is always first of the conqueror's loot."

So Rudyard Kipling opens his Magnus opus -- "Kim" -- the tale of Kimball O'Hara, orphan of an Irish color-sergeant in England's colonial army, then warring with the locals in India's northwest frontier. It is a story of the 19 th century "Great Game," when the Russians and British blackguarded one another in remote villages and frozen passes, fighting for glory, empire, and the crossroads of Central Asia.

The Imperial War Museum in London still celebrates the men of the Black Watch regiment, the fusiliers, and the dragoons who fought a seemingly endless war along what is now the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are no monuments, however, to the real victims of the "Great Game," the Pashtun, the Tajik, the Hazara, and the Uzbeks, pitted against one another in a deadly chess game played by men whose capitols lay half a world away.

How just like the old days it must be for British Lieutenant General David Richards, commander of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces in southern Afghanistan. NATO, taking over from the United States, is pouring troops into Helmand Province, 8,000 of which will be British.
The Ghosts of Kim

Speaking in Kandahar, not all that far from England's old colonial fortress at Quetta, he announced, "I have the force, the rules of engagement, and the caveat-free environment to do everything I need."

One wonders what Greek commander in Alexander's army made that same speech, what Soviet general thought he also had "the force" and a "caveat-free environment" to do as he pleased.

In truth, General Richards holds exactly the ground he stands on -- so long as it isn't nightfall. After four years of war, the U.S.-led coalition is scrambling to contain a spreading insurgency, not only in the south, but the north and the east as well. In late May, Taliban insurgents overran a district capital in Oruzgan Province, and according to the Financial Times, a government presence doesn't exist outside the Helmand Province capital of Lashkar Gar. Two weeks ago Kabul exploded, with tens of thousands of people stoning American military vehicles and chanting for foreign troops to leave.

This ground and history is familiar for the British. It will be, after all, England 's fourth war in Afghanistan.

The first (1838-42) was ignited when the Brits forcibly installed Shah Shujah as the Afghan king. That went rather badly, and riots finally forced the British out of Kabul in 1842. As the army was retreating to India, it was ambushed, overrun, and destroyed. The war ended when the English marched back, ravaged Kabul, burned the great bazaar, and killed 20,000 Afghans.

The second war was in 1878 when the British seized the Khyber Pass, and the third in 1919 when the Afghans had the effrontery to demand control of their own foreign affairs.

The current fighting is described as a "resurgence" by the fundamentalist Taliban, but one needs to be very careful when it comes to dissecting the sources of post-colonial wars. The "Taliban" are overwhelmingly Pashtun, the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. What people don't generally know is that while religion does play a role in all this, the present fighting is a case of nursing the pinion that impelled the steel. And who is better at that than the British?

When India and Pakistan were partitioned in 1947, the British Foreign Office insisted that the Pashtun had to choose between Pakistan or India, rather than joining their brethren in Afghanistan. The English -- ever the masters at using ethnicity to keep people divided and weak -- knew the Pashtuns would remain fiercely independent of the Pakistani government in the Punjab. At the same time, Afghanistan would be splintered between four ethnic groups, divisions Whitehall could always use to manipulate the politics of Central Asia.

What the British did not figure on was that in 2006 they would be fighting the same people who kept the colonial graveyards of India well populated with the young lads from Cork, Dundee, and Suffolk who came down from the high passes in wooden boxes.

While the government of President Hamid Karzai is quick to blame Pakistan for the current fighting, Pashtun coming across the border from Pakistan is hardly a new development. Every day some 15,000 people cross from Pakistan to Afghanistan through Chaman alone. It is a "border" drawn up in Whitehall, not Lahore or Kandahar.

The "Great Game" Continues -- With U.S. In Charge

The event that touched off the riots in Kabul was an auto accident between a U.S. military convoy and Afghan civilians. When angry people began gathering, U.S. troops opened fire. By the time the riots were over, almost 200 people had been wounded, and at least 20 killed.

But demonstrators were also protesting an air attack that killed 16 civilians in the village of Tolokan in Helmand Province. It was not the first such incident. At least 33 other civilians were killed in an air strike May 21, and villagers are reportedly streaming into Kandahar to avoid the bombings.

According to reporting by Seymour Hersh and Knight Ridder, the United States has dramatically stepped up the air war in Iraq, and it would appear "pacification by bombs" is also underway in Afghanistan.

U.S. spokesman Col. Tom Collins said the deaths in Tolokan were the fault of the Taliban. "The ultimate cause of why civilians were injured and killed is because the Taliban knowingly, willfully chose to occupy the homes of these people."

If his statement is true, the Taliban would indeed be violating international law. So would the United States.

Article 48 of the 1977 addition to the Geneva Conventions, Part IV, states, "The Parties to the conflict shall at all times distinguish between the civilian population and combatants and between civilian objects and military objectives and accordingly shall direct their operations only against military objectives."

Article 50 is even more explicit: "The presence within the civilian population of individuals who do not come within the definition of civilians does not deprive the population of its civilian character."

In short, if insurgents are mixed up with civilians, you can't call in air strikes, period. Anyone who does should be hauled before the International Court at The Hague.

The bombings and the anger generated by the occupation are not the only things that fueled the Kabul uprising. The city has a 50% unemployment rate, and 40% of the population goes hungry. According to the UN World Food Program, unless there is an immediate infusion of funds, 2.5 million Afghans will not have enough food this winter, including 450,000 school children and their families.

There may not be money for food, but there is plenty for war. By the end of August there will be 32,500 foreign troops in Afghanistan. In a full-blown resurrection of the "Domino Theory," Hekmit Cetin, NATO's chief civilian representative in Iraq, said, "NATO can't afford to fail in Afghanistan. If we don't go to Afghanistan, Afghanistan will come to us, as terrorists, as narcotics traffickers."

The drug trade is indeed a problem, but in large part because of the war. The Taliban initially suppressed opium production, but war, coupled with a failure to adequately fund a program aimed at weaning farmers off poppy growing, means Afghanistan is now once again the world's largest producer of opium.

Opium profits not only fuel the insurgency, they fill the coffers of the U.S.-supported warlords who are once again in power. It was the corruption and violence of the warlords that originally laid the ground for the Taliban takeover. The only thing keeping the warlords in power today is the U.S. and NATO armed forces.

Zam-Zamman breathes fire no more, replaced by F-15s and AC-130U "Spooky" gun ships spitting artillery rounds and 40 mm cannon shells. The efficiency of death has evolved, but the "game" is the same and for the people of Afghanistan, it is a story as old as their origins.

Mullah Mohammed Kaseem Faroqi, the Pashtun Taliban commander in Helmand Province, recently told the London Times, "My message to Tony Blair and the whole of Britain is, "Do not send your children here. We will kill them'."

And so they will, though dead Afghan children are likely to outnumber them. It is time to retire the "Great Game" to the pages of history and literature and bring the troops home.

DL received her Ph.D. in physiology from Columbia University in 1974.
Her dissertation shows her area of research was insulin receptors in
rat cells. ("Effects of insulin on 3-0-methylglucose transport in
isolated rat adipocytes.")

(4.3) So what's a physiologist? I hear it's a glorified gym teacher.

The On-Line Medical Dictionary defines it as "One who is versed in the science of
physiology; a student of the properties and functions of animal and
vegetable organs and tissues." It has nothing to do with gym class
(except for, perhaps, any physiologists working in the field of sports
medicine.)

(4.4) I thought she was a psychiatrist/psychologist/
psychotherapist?

Nope. Physiology is a biological science, not a behavioral science. DL
does have a Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling license (MFCC.) She
describes it as 'Post-Doctoral', yet it is only 'post' in that she got
it after she'd earned her Ph.D. Technically, postdoctoral education is
assumed to be at the doctoral level or higher, and the MFCC is not.
Furthermore, the MFCC is not a continuing or related course for
physiology. Thus, DL's describing it as 'Post-Doctoral' gives a faulty
impression. MFCC's can be earned at the Master's level. Read a more

It is misleading and not very ethical to use a degree in one field to
imply authority in a completely unrelated field. As a self-proclaimed
'prophet' 'on a mission' one would think she'd be scrupulous about
taking the moral and ethical high ground herself. Since she proudly
describes herself as 'my kid's mom' perhaps she could find in that
role a more appropriate (and relevant) title for her show.

An article in the December 30, 1997 Washington Post reported the
results of a survey conducted by the Benchmark Co., which found that
"...75 percent of Schlessinger's listeners think she is a
psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist. She is nothing of the sort.
The "Dr." label comes courtesy of her degree in physiology, ... Only 3
percent of those surveyed knew the truth." ('Cable's Cavalcade Of

The deceptive use of title is a reasonable place to begin. I knew a Doctor of Pharmacology (and many more credentials). He would not use the title of doctor because it was not done with the quality of professionals he associated with.

I’m ok with Dr. Pepper, Dr. John and those that aren’t pretending falsehoods or doing smoke and mirrors. The ones on tv & radio are worth questioning. I’m sick of seeing psychologist after the ones we know are fake. That is getting into FRAUDULENT. Click the link to see one that has years of examples of this.

There are different situations. If you act as a professional doctor, but your PhD is in literature you need to get your act together. If you’re in a circus, Dr. Clown could be funny. Many media professionals do things for show or to boost low self esteem, they need to have ethics or they are sham. LOW MORALS ARE LOW MORALS.

Radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger is taking credit for resurrecting a controversial California measure that would force public libraries to use Internet-filtering software.

Having inadvertently appeared nude on the Net herself, Schlessinger late last week urged listeners to lobby for the Public Libraries Internet Pornography Bill, California SB238, after a deadlocked 3-3 vote rendered the legislation moribund in committee.

Schlessinger's appeal to the airwaves apparently worked.

"We heard back from people in Sacramento; it was pretty overwhelming," said Keven Bellows, vice president and general manager of the Laura Schlessinger Program. "It definitely got the bill back on track."

On Wednesday, a motion to reconsider the bill passed after three members initially opposed to the measure apparently had a change of heart. The legislation will likely be reintroduced next January.

Bellows said that Schlessinger's daily program is the nation's most popular radio talk show, reaching 18 million listeners from 450 stations across the country.

In October, Net porn entrepreneur Seth Warshavasky purchased and posted nude pictures of Schlessinger to his Web site. She sued to have them removed, then abruptly dropped her action in mid-December.

Schlessinger has been an enthusiastic campaigner for Internet filtering in libraries.

In May, she was cited by Toys"R"Us for canceling up to US$1 million of funds for children's reading rooms, according to the American Library Association.

Toys"R"Us pulled the funding after Schlessinger allegedly "portrayed librarians as promoting pornography and pedophilia," according to an ALA newsletter story on the group's Web site.

The ALA said in its story that the deal took eight months to set up and would have been the fund's biggest corporate sponsorship of the year. The group could not be reached for comment.

The California library bill, introduced by Senator Joe Baca (D-San Bernardino), would force libraries to use blocking software to filter Internet access for children. Kids would be allowed to use unfiltered terminals only with a parent's signed permission or with direct adult supervision.

Pro-filtering group K.I.D.S. (Keep the Internet Decent and Safe), on Wednesday congratulated Schlessinger and her listeners for reviving the bill.

"We have a victory," the organization said in a letter to the talk show. "An appeal to Dr. Laura resulted in an avalanche of mail to three California senators ... [who] had a change of heart."
Filtering Facts, a pro-filtering group, also cheered the move.

"After the Littleton shooting, people are becoming more aware and are moving to protect children," said founder David Burt, a public librarian in Portland, Oregon. "And I think that's great."

But Jim Tyre, co-founder of the Censorware Project, said that the vote wasn't very significant.

"They only voted to reconsider it," he said. "Nothing of any great substance really happened."

Tyre said he was confident that the bill would ultimately go nowhere and cited the failure of lawmakers across the country to pass similar legislation.

The American Library Association also condemned the bill, saying that filtering software is too clumsy to be effective.

ALA spokeswoman Joyce Kelley said that filters frequently block material that shouldn't be blocked while failing to restrict the stuff that should.

Kelley said that, for example, filtering software blocks NASA's Mars Explorer site because the two words joined together spell "sex." At the same time, the software fails to filter interactive content, allowing pedophiles to reach children through channels such as Internet Relay Chat.

"We don't want to give parents a false sense of security," said Kelley. "We don't want people to think if a filter is there everything's all right."

The ALA encourages parents to actively supervise their children's Internet access, said Kelley. "We want to work together with parents to make sure their kids are protected."

But she said that the problem of children looking at porn in libraries had been blown out of proportion.

"Our librarians tell us they don't have problems with it -- it's very rare," said Kelley. "It's not what kids come to libraries for."

The military wives were upset and she went into damage control. Schlessinger responded in her blog and with Bill O'Reilly. The blog only said she was taken out of context. LaPlante is conscientious and reports on military families. Read his coverage of the plights of Utah's military members and their families. LaPlante and Schlessinger basically say the same thing on this subject. Schlessinger is in a bubble and clueless how she sounds to the world. The ugly part is that she used O'Reilly to disparage LaPlante so she remained the rose. Over-the-top O'Reilly

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: "Back of the Book" segment tonight. The Salt Lake City Tribune reported that Dr. Laura Schlessinger was tired of hearing complaints from disenchanted military wives. The paper quotes Dr. Laura as saying, "He could come back without arms, legs and eyeballs, and you're bitching?"

Joining us now from Santa Barbara is Dr. Laura, the author of the book, "The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage." Well, this article interview was by Matthew LaPlante from the Salt Lake City Tribune. Did he misquote you?

DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER, AUTHOR, "THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF MARRIAGE": Well, that's a correct quote, but it's out of context. And the context is about the fact that, when you're the warrior's wife or the warrior's mom, as I am, because my son's deployed in combat in the Middle East, you can bitch and whine and moan to each other — but never to the warrior, because that distracts them. It demoralizes them, and that puts them more in harm's way.

So it's about a sense of responsibilities for how we, as the warrior's family, have to rise to the occasion, take care of business on our own, and not worry and concern the warrior. And the second part of that was that, you know, everything is in perspective. Whatever's happening in your home, in your life, you are not tiptoeing around IEDs.

O'REILLY: OK.

SCHLESSINGER: So it's really important that we, as military families, put our lives and what we're enduring in perspective.

O'REILLY: And Mr. LaPlante didn't get any of that across in his article, as far as I read. I mean, it was just basically, you were criticizing the military families who obviously are suffering. Correct?

SCHLESSINGER: And it's so painful to me that I was used to hurt military families.

O'REILLY: Let me just stop you. Let me just stop you right now. I just want everyone to know who Matthew LaPlante is. And you were very foolish to talk with him, Doctor, with all due respect. You need to have your staff check out these people.

SCHLESSINGER: All right.

O'REILLY: We invited Mr. LaPlante on the program tonight to put forth his point-of-view and he said, "I'll decline the invitation, because I don't think I can scream loud enough to be heard on O'Reilly's show." So Matthew LaPlante isn't a journalist. He's out to hurt you. He's out to take your comments and make it look like you want to hurt military families. That's what he wants to do.

SCHLESSINGER: Yes.

O'REILLY: That's what he's in business to do in the Salt Lake City Tribune. Why would you talk to a man like that?

SCHLESSINGER: Well, to be honest with you, I took for granted that my staff had checked it out. It was a last-minute request. I was in Salt Lake City doing my show live to honor military moms, ironically, and we never — he never asked me about military moms. And I covered an awful lot of subjects.

O'REILLY: Doctor, he wanted to hurt you. That's what he wanted to do. He wanted to hurt you.

SCHLESSINGER: Well, you know you and I, Bill, we can take it. And that's all right. It's part of, unfortunately, what we have to deal with. But the families were hurt.

I mean this was carried on AP I came out with my blog on Monday, and correcting it and clarifying it. But it's like feathers out of a pillow in the wind. I can't bring all the feathers back. And that this hurt one military family just decimates me.

O'REILLY: OK. Now let's just on the record get your thoughts. We have in this country a very, very terrible situation in Iraq. Most of us aren't suffering. The military families are suffering. And our soldiers and marines in Iraq are suffering.

SCHLESSINGER: Yes.

O'REILLY: OK. Now, your message to people here who have people over there as you do, your son, is you can complain internally, but don't complain to the actual soldiers and Marines because that demoralizes them and makes them feel worse. That's your message?

SCHLESSINGER: And it puts them in harm's way, because they're distracted, worrying about how we're feeling and what's going on here and will we stand by them? Are we so upset that we can't cope? We can't be doing that when they're in combat. I whine every day that I cannot protect my son's body and his soul while he's over there in combat.

But when he calls me the rare times he can, you know, make a call, I am up and supportive and I listen to him. And I never whine to him. We have to support them. They are in a horrendous situation there. And we need to be warrior families.

O'REILLY: All right. Well, I'm glad we could put the record straight. Matthew LaPlante is invited on this program. He will not be yelled at. We have no respect for him. I do believe you. I believe this man is an ideologue who's out to hurt you, and he shouldn't be working in any major newspaper.

SCHLESSINGER: I got to give him some points, because after my blog came out he has been a gentleman about it. It just hurts me that we can't suck all the pain that families are having back in.

O'REILLY: All right. Be very careful who you talk to, Laura. Thank you.

SCHLESSINGER: Yes, I'll check with you first.

No, what she means is that a lot of parents don’t know how to raise their sons these days. Being in the military teaches responsibility for ones actions, accountability for things in life and shows boys how to be men (among many other things) – which is something many parents don’t do anymore. Parents don’t know how to parent. They push their kids off on nannies and babysitters too often and are too caught up with their corporate world. No one can love or raise child like their own parent. Spend time with your children, you be their teacher. Teach them the things that matter in this messed up world.

And do you have proof that that is her son’s myspace account? There are MANY forged pages on there. Make sure you have your facts straight before you point fingers….

If Dr. Laura's son has similar tendencies to the VT shooter, should that be covered up and she do her routine spin? These rumors are not new. Schlessinger would know about him. She hides things and goes into spin control. Friends like O'Reilly will discredit anyone else that has another say. She may actually believe that the military can fix children who are deeply harmed by BAD PARENTING. I would hope as a parent the suicidal tendency would get her attention. If ever the fake "Dr" ruse has done damage, this would scream why fraud is BAD.

Her writings for Wendy McCaw's Santa Barbara News-Press are pathetic and cowardly. I admit I haven't read this Sunday column. Her previous attempts at acting "local", since returning from her strange disappearance, is a dismal failure. The unprofessional Ampersand management doesn't notify the public when their regular writers go missing. They don't answer questions. Even the current FBI probe may dead end because the newspaper gang appear to all be gifted pathological liars and cons, adept at exploitation and graft.
A friend found the billboard photos on the internet. They are not easy to view. We've been sheltered from such flagrant dreck. I didn't even expect a quack to be that low life. OMG, the god of money destroyed another soul completely. No wonder she is complicit in Ampersand's infractions.

I pity the poor suckers who pay money for this ugly eye debri and support the massive CEO salaries. You're destroying your children's landscape.

In full disclosure I didn't read Laura Schlessinger's Santa Barbara News-Press today. Everyone one at the News-Press is in crime fighting mode since the paper was attacked by 15,000 local, state and federal illegal child porn images. No one cares for children like Laura does it. Certainly she will spew forth her vast wisdoms on the current crimes at the News-Press. More so, on her greatest concern, children. To think she took time away from her causes to do a drive downtown and notice what's going on! (It's maybe 5 minutes from her estate. How long has she lived here?)

And DL then warns us that exactly such a trend just ruined Lake Arrowhead! She then concludes that the City Council should start to think about this disturbing trend.

Isn't it great to have such an insightful city watchdog-journalist at work in our community. Too bad about Lake Arrowhead, though."

Schlessinger is the same politico, disguised as a radio moralist, who wants to rework the draft and put guns in schools. Is there anything she can't fix in 30 seconds?

Washington, D.C., March 30, 2007 - The Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate of the United States Library of Congress this morning announced a new initiative for its cataloging workflow. A pilot program -- expected to launch by late spring -- will involve outsourcing several resource description operations to Mountain View, California-based Google.

Under the new arrangement, MARC records for titles from Google Book Search publishing partners will be created by the Google indexing system. The original cataloging of these works will be accomplished automatically by a software program.

“Think of it as an electronic brain,” said Richard Sumner, a Google representative speaking about the computing equipment involved in the new alliance. “Our artificial intelligence systems can fully handle descriptive and subject cataloging.”

A senior administration official at the Library of Congress, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the pilot program has the potential to expand to the point of eliminating the need for any professional catalogers. The source also mentioned plans to migrate the OPAC to LibraryThing and turn the American Memory site into a Wiki.

ALA president Laura Schlessinger could not immediately be reached for comment about the announcement.

Because of her tasteless remarks, critics called for a boycott of her show and her show's sponsors, and this opposition had measurable success. Not only was Doctor Laura censured for her remarks (remarks which she is fully free to espouse despite how hurtful they might be), but the assumptions conditioning her discourse were brought into the national consciousness and productive discussions resulted from them."

Now that she's hired The Reputation Doctor, because rep is everything! In her April 5, 2007 blog, she merely calls her nemesis obese and paranoid. Santa Barbara's Laura Schlessinger, Leslie Bennetts, and "cute" or?

Why wouldn't there be anything but a "huge public backlash against the feminista paranoia in Leslie Bennetts' new book, "The Feminine Mistake.'"? as Dr. Laura writes in the behind a paywall Santa Barbara News-Press column.

Who has the huge public relation machine all over this? Leslie Bennetts is not a name that gets much press. And when did you last hear about her huge listening audience? I don't see the battle so much about stay at home or working mothers. I say it's public relation spin and Schessinger wins for now. Substance? Time will tell if more women can speak up. And how can we forget house hubby Lew? He and one house keeper take care of a 3. acre ocean view estate?

How does that question "cute" or "slut" keep coming up? Some of us do believe whenever the name Dr. Laura comes up, bring out the hypocritical reminder shots. Don't forget the CNN interviews (9-29-06, 1-9-08 et al).

In full disclosure, I did not read Leslie's book. I did google her. WOW! It looked alot like googling Laura. You get the better PR machine's view of the world. I checked out a message board because it has the best writers and they know years of Laura's spins. Both sides have a say. Ok, I'm biased. Laura's support comes from, we'll call her "T", the others are several, with "K" the most "vocal" on this one. For the most part, remind you, on the internet I find it is the same old Laura controled PR machine. This might be the last place where the other side is allowed. "T" is like the many other Laura clones, they don't address her lack of credentials, many of the hypocrisies and lies et al. To their credit, some will now admit that is her in the nude. They say she's cute. These are not the people I'd listen to, they seem to love the kool-aide. One thing the Laura business does is to get people to repeat her rhetoric. I don't aways know how to tell the difference between the ones who are like a Jim Jones follower or the troll types. They pretty much sound the same and share the same denials. As if they all had the same indoctrination?

I don't have a dog in today's fight . I made plenty of wrong choices. That gave me enough experience to make some great choices. Maybe I'm just lucky? I don't have to worry about those important concerns for myself. I do know many people who have raised children, stayed in marriage or not. There is not one answer for all. Laura is selling product, she is not as she appears. People like "T" may not even be as they appear. This one agrees, there is not one answer for all. She promotes Laura, is against a book she didn't read, she did read the "reviews". She has no financial worries, has a degree and a hobby that makes money and she said "I now maintain many content web sites that profit by means of affiliate marketing. They make a nice passive income." Laura wouldn't use people like her? Doesn't her web site offer making money for SAHM's? "T" can afford to promote Laura. She's probably well paid. Supports Bush war and torture policy and agrees with their "global warning" and the complete package.

As I also note in SHAM, fully three-quarters of confessed Dr. Laura junkies told The Washington Post that they just naturally assumed she was "a psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist." That, to me, is a problem. It's also a serious breach of professional ethics, when the central figure in the confusion not only fails to correct the false impression, but actually seeks to maximize profits from it."

Another little blog mystery. Or, how irresponsible can professionals be?

Comment # 26, from editor bird (Tom?), Santa Barbara's blog*, is in the March 27, 2007 post "Adult or juvenile?" It is a serious topic for a town struggling with long on going gang problems and a recent murder, involving two teens. District Attorney Christine Stanley right away decided to try a fourteen year old as an adult. In Schlessinger's March 25, 2007 Santa Barbara News-Press column she begins, "Yes, Christie Stanley, try a 14-year-old as an adult: In a News-Press report..." Her "reasoning process" is astounding, you have to give her credit, she is fast.

On March 29th this comment showed up in "Adult or juvenile?":

It sounds like her, except for the "I am credentialed in psychotherapy (MB 14914 - Marriage and Family therapist in State of California)"? The blog comments did discuss her too much. #26 was more off the subject and was it her? Later, in other posts, John Palminteri's name and posts came under discussion when Craig Smith wrote about Palminteri in "Another Reason Why I Don't Allow Comments. Monday, April 2, 2007". The editor bird crowd misinterpreted Smith's blog yet got the message to verify or (unverified). Or, as with Palminteri in another comment: "John Palminteri (imposter) | March 29th, 2007 at 5:03 pm".

"Dr. Laura Schlessinger (unverified)" showed up when? After Smith's blog. What is unusual, they were not able to verify the "new friend" Schlessinger right away? And why can't they now get a straight answer from her? Does the mystery lead some people to believe she is a psychotherapist? The actual person can document her credentials.

In her March 25, 2007 column she sure slams Laurence Steinberg, a professor in the Psychology Department at Temple University (title?) and Professor Mario Garcia by saying their work "is just infuriating nonsense".

Laura Schlessinger, not a doctor but plays one, writes a column for Wendy McCaw's Santa Barbara News-Press Thursdays and Sundays. It's part of what Wendy and co-publisher Baron Arthur von Wiesenberger (better known as Nipper, suspected to be Nelville) calls a "transition". More like they are fighting workers in a worldview David and Goliath struggle. When Laura heard longtime veteran columnist/journalist, Barney Brantingham, had resigned over ethical issues, she called to ask for his job. As co-publishers easily smitten with celebrity, they jumped on her offer. Much to the exasperation of a community not aligned with her sham or preformance. WTF does this have to do with Pam Anderson? Not much. Other than it was a slow news day and we wanted to read what Canada had to say about Laura's November 9th visit to Vancouver. Canada not being as bamboozled by these "preacher" types. We were looking for statements, possibly a protest. Not. She had annoyed radio hosts at CFUN, for co-opting a comfortable chair and coming in with vast security. Downtown Eastside Enquirer blogged: "Foxman was also clearly annoyed by the level of security around Dr. Laura. He was relieved when she left because the police left. There had been barriers and rope around the radio station, as if protesters were expected.
